Robot Communication track

Lesson 01 · Lessons

Lab Environment Setup

Installing Python and pymodbus, understanding the shared modules and checking the environment

Lessons3 min readFree lesson

This track replicates HIWIN robot communication with one PC and no actual robot. In the first part, you will install the tool, understand the structure of loading the shared library (_shared/), and check "ready" with the environment self-diagnosis script. If you get it right once here, you can proceed through the next 8 episodes without any problems.

Learning Objectives

  • Install Python · pymodbus · pyserial and check the version.
  • Understand the bootstrap structure in which main.py loads the _shared/ shared module in each part.
  • Explains the practice ports (Robot 1502 / Gripper 1503 / Vision 6000) and the reason for avoiding port 502.
  • Run the environment self-diagnosis script and check “Pass”.

Target environment

  • Tools: Python 3.10+ / pymodbus 3.6.9 / pyserial 3.5
  • Platform: Windows PC (simulation) — no actual Robot/PLC/Gripper required
  • Verification: CLI automatic execution — python src/setup_check/main.py

Key concepts

1) What does a simulator replace?

Real equipment Replacement for this track
Robot (Modbus slave) _shared/robot_server_sim.py
XEG electric gripper _shared/gripper_sim.py
Top PLC/Master _shared/modbus_master.py
Vision/Superior System (TCP) _shared/tcp_echo_server.py
RS-232 cable com0com virtual COM port (Part 04)

2) _shared/ shared library

Rather than duplicating the large simulator from piece to piece, place it once on lecture/_shared/. Each piece writes this in two ways.

  • standalone execution: The simulator is launched directly from a separate terminal, and the convenience code is connected via TCP (not imported).
  • Module import: Helpers such as word_tools and modbus_master are imported by main.py.

3) Depth-independent import bootstrap

The edited file is as deep as GROUP/LEC/src/PROJECT/main.py, so instead of a relative path, it moves up and searches for _shared/.

import os, sys
_d = os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))
while _d != os.path.dirname(_d) and not os.path.isdir(os.path.join(_d, "_shared")):
    _d = os.path.dirname(_d)
sys.path.insert(0, os.path.join(_d, "_shared"))

4) Practice ports and 502 avoidance

Role simulator Lab Port real
robot robot_server_sim.py 1502 502
Gripper gripper_sim.py 1503 502
Vision tcp_echo_server.py 6000 Random

In Windows, ports below 1024, such as 502, may require administrator privileges, so 1502/1503 is used in this lab.

Environment preparation

#1) Install dependencies (first time)
cd lecture/_shared
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt

#2) Prevent console Hangul from being broken (every session)
set PYTHONUTF8=1           # PowerShell: $env:PYTHONUTF8=1

See as example

Example 1 — src/setup_check/main.py: Environmental self-diagnosis

Check Python version, dependencies, shared module import + conversion values at once. (see file for full code)

#Core — _shared search and conversion verification with word_tools
from word_tools import split_word, combine_word, ieee754_encode
a = split_word(90000)                 # -> (24464, 1)
assert combine_word(*a) == 90000
assert ieee754_encode(10.5) == 1093140480
print("Passed environmental inspection ✅")

View Run/verify

cd lecture/01_intro/01_setup
python src/setup_check/main.py

Expected output (only the Python version number depends on your environment):

=== Practice environment check ===
[1] Python 3.12.10  OK
[2] pymodbus 3.6.9 / pyserial 3.5  OK
[3] _shared import OK: split_word(90000)=(24464, 1), ieee754_encode(10.5)=1093140480
------------------------------
Passed environmental inspection ✅

✅ Checkpoint: If the last line is Passed environmental inspection ✅ and the exit code is 0, you are ready.

Common Mistakes

Q. ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pymodbus'

A. This means that the dependency is not installed or is installed in another Python. Install current Python with python -m pip install -r ../../_shared/requirements.txt.

Q. Korean text appears as ???? or as broken characters.

A. This is a Windows console default encoding (cp949) issue. Run set PYTHONUTF8=1 ($env:PYTHONUTF8=1 for PowerShell).

Q. from word_tools import ... to ModuleNotFoundError.

A. The _shared/ navigation bootstrap is missing, or the file is moved outside the _shared folder. Make sure that line 6 of the bootstrap is at the top of main.py.

Q. The simulator does not run on port 502 (Permission denied).

A. It is a privileged port. Use 1024 or higher like --port 1502.

Cleanup

  • We are ready to simulate Robot/Gripper/Vision/Master with just a PC.
  • Shared codes are collected in _shared/, and each side loads them with bootstrap.
  • The practice port uses 1502/1503/6000.

Try it yourself

Solve the assignment below. The reference solution is shown below.

📖 Manual Source

  • The practice environment is self-organized by this track. The basis for ports and registers is indicated in each section later.

# Shared library (`_shared/`)

This is a Python tool/simulator shared by all parties that reproduces HIWIN robot communication using only a PC.
Instead of duplicating large simulators from piece to piece, we manage them here in one place. (Based on pymodbus 3.6.9 / pyserial 3.5, all execution verification completed)

## Installation

```powershell
cd lecture/_shared
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
#If Hangul is broken in the Windows console:
set PYTHONUTF8=1     # PowerShell: $env:PYTHONUTF8=1
```

## How to use it in each part

- Run the **standalone simulator** (Robot/Gripper/Vision) directly in a separate terminal, and connect the convenience `main.py` to With-TCP/Socket (no import required).
  ```powershell
  python lecture/_shared/robot_server_sim.py --port 1502 --host 127.0.0.1
  ```
- **Helper module** (`word_tools`, `modbus_master`) is imported by convenience `main.py`. Path bootstrap:
  ```python
  import os, sys
  sys.path.insert(0, os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), "..", "..", "..", "..", "_shared"))
  from word_tools import split_word
  from modbus_master import RobotMaster
  ```
(Because the edited file location is `GROUP/LEC/src/PROJECT/main.py`, it is 4 levels higher up to `_shared`.)

## File list

| file | Role | How to use |
|------|------|---------|
| `word_tools.py` | 32bit Low/High word segmentation/restoration, SWAP_WORD, IEEE754 conversion | 05, 07, Appendix B |
| `modbus_master.py` | Modbus Master CLI + `RobotMaster` Class | 05, 06, 07 |
| `robot_server_sim.py` | Robot = Modbus slave (implementation of command cycle) | 06, 09 |
| `gripper_sim.py` | XEG electric gripper = Modbus slave | 07, 09 |
| `tcp_echo_server.py` | TCP/IP high-level system (vision) simulator, `{data}` format | 03, 09 |
| `serial_echo.py` | RS-232 serial echo server (virtual COM) | 04 |
| `serial_client.py` | RS-232 serial client (virtual COM) | 04 |

> I/O handshake (Part 02) and integrated controller (Part 09) are included in each part of `src/<project>/main.py`.

## Check quick operation

```powershell
#1) Conversion tool (no equipment required)
python word_tools.py
#2) Launch the robot server (one terminal)
python robot_server_sim.py --port 1502 --host 127.0.0.1
#3) Control as master from another terminal
python modbus_master.py --port 1502 read-di 0 8     # SO1~SO8 (SO4=Ready)
python modbus_master.py --port 1502 read-ir 524 1   #Operation status (1=Idle)
```

> **Port 502 Permissions**: On Windows, port 502 may require administrator privileges. In practice, like `--port 1502`
> If you use port 1024 or higher, the process will proceed without permission issues. It actually uses Robots/equipment 502.

> **Running two simulators simultaneously**: Disconnect the ports. Example) Robot `--port 1502`, Gripper `--port 1503`.

Assignment

Problem 1 — Dependency self-diagnosis

  • File name: homework_01/main.py
  • Core concepts: module import, exception handling

Requirements

  • Prints the Python version.
  • Try importing pymodbus and pyserial. If successful, the version is printed. If unsuccessful, a friendly installation guide is printed.
  • If everything is normal, READY is output in the last line, and if any one fails, NOT READY is output.

Expected output

Python 3.12.10
pymodbus 3.6.9
pyserial 3.5
READY

Hint

  • Compare versions with import sys; sys.version_info.
  • Missing detection with try: import pymodbus / except ImportError:.

Problem 2 — Coordinate transformation round-trip verification

  • File name: homework_02/main.py
  • Core concept: _shared import bootstrap, 32bit Split/Restore

Requirements

  • Load split_word / combine_word of _shared/word_tools.py.
  • Split the coordinates 123.456 mm (×1000 = 123456) into Low/High words and restore them again to check if they are the same as the original values.
  • Verifies both +123.456 and -123.456 and outputs OK/FAIL, respectively.

Expected output

+123.456 mm -> Low=-7616, High=1 -> Restore 123.456 OK
-123.456 mm -> Low=7616, High=-2 -> Restore -123.456 OK

Hint

  • To be imported, you must add 6 lines of _shared navigation bootstrap at the top of main.py.
  • split_word(raw) after raw = round(mm * 1000), combine_word(low, high) / 1000 for restoration.

"""Answer 1 — Dependency self-diagnosis

Key points:
- Catch import failures as try/except ImportError to prevent the program from crashing.
- The package name of the serial module is pyserial, but the import name is serial.

Common mistakes:
- Installing other (unusual) packages with `pip install serial`. Be sure to install `pyserial`."""

"""Answer 2 — Round-trip verification of coordinate transformation

Key points:
- You must have the _shared navigation bootstrap to import word_tools.
- Since the coordinates are on a 0.001 scale, multiply them by ×1000 to create an integer raw and then split_word.
- split_word returns a signed 16-bit word. High word can be negative.

Common mistakes:
- Missing bootstrap -> ModuleNotFoundError: word_tools
- When restoring, ÷1000 was omitted, resulting in a value 1000 times larger."""
